Is a UV coating important?
When you buy glasses online, facing the variety of lens coating such as anti-reflective coating, UV
coating, you might be very puzzled, do I need these coatings?
In fact,
every different coating is of great importance, you can add coatings to your
lens according to your own needs. This article is aimed to introduce the
importance of UV coating.
A UV coating
is a treatment for eyeglass lenses block those same rays from damaging your
eyes.
UV radiation
damage collagen fibers and accelerate aging of the skin. Both UVA and UVB
destroy vitamin A in skin, which may cause further damage. Besides, Ultraviolet
light damages DNA and sterilizes surfaces with which it comes into contact.
Ultraviolet
does not only damage our skin but also our eyes. Eyes are the most sensitive to
UV rays, which can cause "welder's flash" or "arc eye"
(photokeratitis) and can lead to cataracts, pterygium and pinguecula formation.
To a lesser extent, exposure to UV rays
causes photokeratitis ("snow blindness"), and the cornea, the
lens, and the retina can be damaged.
Regular
plastic eyeglass lenses block most UV light, whereas adding a UV-blocking dye increase
UV protection to 100 percent. Other eyeglass lens materials, including
polycarbonate and most high-index plastics, have 100 percent UV protection
built-in, so an extra lens treatment is not required for these lenses.
By the
way, photochromic lenses also block all UV rays without an added UV lens
treatment.
All
most every lens of online glass shop like Firmoo, Glasseshop, Sllac.com,
Warbyparker and Wherelight contain a free UV-coating. You don’t need to pay
extra fees to add a UV coating.
